Cosmetic surgery is incredibly popular, with over 1.6 million procedures performed in the US last year. That might sound like a lot. But consider this: there were almost 14 million non-surgical (minimally-invasive) cosmetic procedures done in the US in 2014. That’s almost 9 times as many!
Most of these procedures are for the face. With the daily assault of toxins, sunlight, and aging on our skin, it’s no wonder so many of us want a secret weapon to turn back the clock on our appearances. And as scientific research allows doctors to get better and better results, the numbers will only grow.
Here’s a rundown of the Top 5 Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures, as compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
This is a skin resurfacing procedure usually performed on the whole face. It can remove fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of small scars, and generally refresh the appearance. The full dermabrasion procedure is actually considered to be surgery, because it goes much deeper and requires anesthesia. But microdermabrasion is a gentler procedure, and produces great results for most people.
#4 Laser Hair Removal
Looks like a lot of people are tired of shaving and waxing! And who can blame them — it’s a hassle that takes up valuable time. Laser hair removal offers the promise of permanently getting rid of unwanted hair, so you never have to shave or wax again.
#3 Chemical Peel
Kind of like microdermabrasion, the chemical peel treats the skin of the whole face, to refresh the appearance and reduce small defects. In a chemical peel, special chemicals (such as alpha-hydroxy acids) are placed on the facial skin, left in place for a short period of time, and then removed. This removes the outer layer of dead and damaged skin cells, leaving the skin rejuvenated.
#2 Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are substances used to fill small defects in the skin (such as wrinkles, or small scars). There are several different types, including hyaluronic acid (the most popular dermal filler), collagen, and calcium hydroxylapatite. With many dermal fillers, maintenance injections are needed periodically to keep your skin looking youthful.
And the winner is……..
Botulinum toxin has been popular for a while. Injections of botox have been the most common minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure for the past ten years. Clearly, people are getting value out of this procedure. This neuromuscular blocking agent is injected into certain tiny facial muscles to block the nerve signals from getting to them, so the muscles stay relaxed. This reduces wrinkles. Many of us have probably seen “Botox fail” types of photos; if done poorly, the facial paralysis can cause your expressions to look strange, but if done well by a professional, this is rare. So make sure you choose your provider carefully, paying a little more if necessary, to get the best results.
