What is Bariatric Surgery?
In the U.S. today, more than half of adults are overweight, and around 1/3 of adults are extremely overweight. Many of these people have been trying to lose weight for years, using diet, exercise, supplements, and other “miracle weight loss” methods. However, people often find that these methods don’t deliver as promised, or that they do lose weight, but quickly gain it back.
Excess weight often makes people feel unattractive. They may also be unable to participate fully in life, because they have a difficult time with physical activities, and they often lack the energy to get moving. In addition, being significantly overweight is a huge health risk. Diabetes, heart disease, and even some cancers are strongly linked to being overweight. So people who are extremely overweight have many reasons to lose the weight — they just don’t have a method.
Bariatric surgery is a branch of surgery that includes procedures to help people lose weight. These procedures affect either the consumption of food, or the absorption of calories from food, to induce weight loss. The results are often dramatic, with many people losing 50% or more of their excess pounds within months. It’s no surprise that bariatric surgery has become a more and more popular method for overweight people to lose weight fast.
This section of Doctor Review is devoted to the bariatric surgical procedures that can help you shed excess weight for good, so you can get healthy, feel great, and participate fully in life.
